River Clearance Project
This is a top view of a river clearance project. The two abutments are constructed in such a way as to force the river through a smaller opening. This creates a much greater force of water which tends to wash out a mud or sand river bottom thereby deepening it to provide more depth clearance for river steamboats. This method was primarily utilized on the clearance of Western Rivers.
