This photo shows three pontoons which are canvas pontoons. The two white structures are the pontoons covered with canvas and the center pontoon is only the wooden framework, without the canvas covering, to show the structure. The timber balks laid across the top of the three pontoons support the roadway, and the light colored pieces to the left of the picture are the chesses (planks) which provide the roadway for wheeled vehicles and men / animals on foot. The balks, and chesses are all fastened together with rope, using no nails.
