Filling Room / Brig, Fort Trumbull, 2009

 

This picture is of what was originally known as the "Gun Powder Filling Room," when the fort was first built. In later years most artillery ammunition cartridges came "pre-filled" (with gun powder) and the filling room was no longer needed. It was then turned into a brig (prison room) as the heavy iron-barred door and interior window spaces indicate.

Fort Trumbull Magazine; 2009

 

This picture was taken of the Fort Trumbull Magazine (ammunition storage). The black containers are black powder (gun powder) containers. The table whose corner projects into the picture is the powder ladelling table where the cartridges for the main battery are filled. The magazine will eventually also hold artillery shot, small arms ammunition, bombs, grenades, flares and other munitions. All materials seen here were made by the NETE.

Engineer's Office, Fort Trumbull

 

This is a picture of the Colonel's desk, in the Engineer's Office, with a white chest, and small cabinet covered with a table covering. Two smaller tables would hold candles and lanterns in the evening. Two candle glasses sit on top of the cabinet. This furniture was donated by the local people in New London, Groton, and Ledyard with a significant portion of the furniture and material donated to the fort by the NETE.

This is a photo of the four double bunks, two tables and bench in the Enlisted bunk-room, all of which, that the NETE has built.

NETE Annual Meeting - 2009; Fort Trumbull

 

The same members as the first Fort Trumbull photo except for the man on the extreme Right. He is the Fort Trumbull Ranger. The Ranger has been extremely helpful in allowing the Northeast Topographical Engineers (NETE) to bring some period furniture, maps, drawings, models, and equipment to the Fort Trumbull interior spaces. This work, which, is all NETE volunteer work, makes the fort interior look just a bit more period in the six rooms that the NETE have worked in as well as some of the fort casemates. The picture is taken on the road leading to the rear of the fort and the Main Sally Port.
